Japanese reading and writing
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test is given once a year on the first Sunday of December. This guide will help you prepare for the test and give hints on how to successfully pass it. Compiled from my friends' and my personal experience. **I strongly recommend getting previous tests and practicing. Not only to get a feel for the layout but also how to manage your time effectively** The test layout/time: JLPT Level 1: Vocab: Listening: Grammar: 9:45 ? 10:45 11:25 ? 12:30 13:30 ? 15:15 Test Time 45min 45min 90min Answer Time JLPT Level 2: Vocab: Listening: Grammar: 9:45 ? 10:35 11:15 ? 12:15 13:15 ? 14:40 Test Time 35min 40min 70min Answer Time Criteria: Level 1: Level 2: 2000+ Kanji, 10,000+ words 1000+ Kanji, 6,000+ words After about 900 hours of study After about 600 hours of study Breakdown of the Test: 1. Kanji / Vocabulary Tips: İ@ About 85% of the ON readings for kanji will be based on the component piece of that kanji. This will save you from a lot of frustration at guessing the correct reading for a kanji you have not seen before. Examples: nbsp; 2. Listening Tips: İ@ Pay close attention to the pictures. Some pictures, can be very similar, so make sure you are choosing the right ones. İA Listen to the whole dialogue. Sometimes you may think you have it all figured out and answer before they finish. Often the last sentence may reverse everything they have said previously. Especially be careful of this on listening involving dates, times, and shopping. İB During the second listening part, avoid writing too much. Instead focus on the dialogue. On the listenings I would use the shortest abbreviation possible. Such as M=man, F=Friday, 6a=6:00am, etc. Usually 3 or 4 of these numbers or letters would be the most I wrote, just to keep straight when coming to answering the questions. For example, some listenings may have a conversation between a man and women about something, but they only want the woman's opinion. İC There will be a short break 40 sec??? in the middle of section 2. İD Make sure you look at the picture before the listening starts. 3. Reading / Grammar Tips İ@ You should do this section backwards. Start with grammar then do to the readings. For Level 1, don't spend more than 30 mins, for Level 2 don't spend more than 20mins. As each reading question has the same value in points, start with the short readings, as you can read and answer faster. İA Frequent grammar patterns: You should know all the various grammar patterns associated with: Point breakdown Vocab: 100 Listening: 100 Grammar: 200 Total: 400 Passing Level 1: 70% Passing Level 2: 60% *Average is whole test, even if you don¬Åft do well in one part; you can make up for it by doing better in other areas.
